499 men, women, and children were sleeping at the Durham Rescue Mission on January 19, 2018. Of those 499 clients, 80 men slept on the floor.
Durham, NC – Tuesday, April 24, 2018 at 2:00 PM, the Durham Rescue Mission will be holding a groundbreaking ceremony marking the beginning of construction on the Clegg Family Student Housing building located on the men’s campus at 1201 E Main St in Durham.
Special guests include Phil and Brenda Clegg; Michael Leach, representative from the Governor’s office; Sheriff Mike Andrews; Geoff Durham, President of the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce; staff, and clients.
The Clegg Family graciously provided the lead gift for this facility. The Cleggs are concerned that those who are our neediest citizens will have a place of refuge.
In addition to this generous donation, the Cleggs were instrumental in providing the Center for Hope’s dining area which is named for Mr. Clegg’s parents, Ralph and Mildred Clegg.
The Clegg family have been great friends and supporters of the Durham Rescue Mission since the beginning. In fact, back in the early 1970’s, Dr. Ernie Mills worked for Clegg’s Termite and Pest Control while trying to get the Durham Rescue Mission off the ground.
This new building will provide safe shelter for 54 homeless men who are furthering their education at either Durham Technical Community College or North Carolina Central University—all in an effort to help them learn new marketable job skills.
A reception will be held following the ceremony.
